Imagine a world in which each new gun buyer receives educational material on gun owner responsibilities and the legal use of deadly force in self defense. After all, the greater the armed citizen’s understanding of the legalities bearing on use of force in self defense, the better it is for the entire firearms community.

The Armed Citizens’ Legal Defense Network, Inc. is a membership organization dedicated to preventing abuse by the criminal justice system of its members who act in justifiable self defense. In addition to the Network’s membership benefits package, its mission includes educating all armed citizens so gun owners can both appropriately counter threats and better manage interactions with law enforcement and the legal system after self defense.

As part of this effort, the Network has educated over 100,000 armed citizens every year through its complimentary booklet What Every Gun Owner Needs to Know About Self-Defense Law, by Marty Hayes, J.D. These booklets are distributed through the Network’s hundreds of Affiliated Instructors and Affiliated Gun Shops, but more can be accomplished. Enter, the Armed Citizens’ Educational Foundation (“the Foundation”).BookletCover By creating the Foundation, the Network intends to expand this educational outreach through the support of industry partners and contributors. The Foundation is a true 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization recognized by the IRS that can obtain tax-deductible contributions from industry representatives as well as individuals.

The Foundation is directed by Foundation President J. Vincent Shuck, who also serves as Vice President of the Armed Citizens’ Legal Defense Network, Inc. Marty Hayes, who also serves as the Network’s President, and Gila Hayes, the Network’s Operations Manager, join him in the Foundation’s administration. The mission of the Foundation is to promote awareness and education in the lawful use of firearms and specifically the use of deadly force in self-defense situations. The booklet, What Every Gun Owner Needs to Know About Self-Defense Law will become the cornerstone of the developing educational effort focused on armed citizens. While expanding the booklet distribution may be the initial activity, the Foundation can also conduct meetings and seminars, award grants, and engage in activities related to this educational effort.

Gun owner education and the Network’s concurrent mission of providing support to members who have acted in self defense are interdependent. Whenever a gun owner makes a mistake regarding a decision in using deadly force or negligently causes the death of another through a firearms mishap, it damages the whole pro-gun/pro-self defense community. The Foundation’s educational efforts will increase knowledge and responsibility among armed citizens, and thus protect our right to keep and bear arms. This benefits all of us in the firearms industry, from manufacturer to share holder to the purchaser of guns and related products.

The new Foundation provides an opportunity to involve more of armed citizenry’s luminaries into the gun owner educational efforts. The three Network leaders will guide the Foundation, but the Foundation will seek input from members of the Foundation’s Advisory Committee, once appointed, who will represent the corporate and Second Amendment support community.

The Network is the preeminent organization supporting the legally armed citizen and plans to remain in this premiere position. The Foundation will help maintain this ambition.
